The opinions expressed are those of the writer. ![]() Earlier this week, Apple rolled out macOS Sierra to the public. MacOS Sierra (version 10.12) is the successor to OS X (version 10.11) El Capitan. Several major features have been added in macOS Sierra such as Siri and a smarter Photos app. There are also many under-the-hood improvements included in the update, but there are twelve handy changes that you should know about. 1.) Auto Unlock If you have an Apple Watch, then you can use it to unlock your computer instead of entering your password. The “Auto Unlock” feature is activated simply by wearing an Apple Watch in the range of your Mac computer. ![]() You can do this by opening the Apple Watch app on your iOS device and opening the Software Update menu under the “My Watch” section. Setting up two-factor authentication through Apple / Screenshot Credit: Amit Chowdhry After you have upgraded to watchOS 3 and ensured that two-factor authentication is turned on, then you will need to “Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac.” This can be done by opening System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General tab > checkmark Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac. Then you will need to type in your Mac password to activate this feature and ensure that you have a Passcode set on your Apple Watch for Auto Unlock to work. Plus you may have to finish setting up two-factor authentication by signing in with your Apple ID on your iPhone in Settings. Messages Update / Photo Credit: Apple The Messages app has been updated in macOS Sierra so that it works similarly as the Messages app in iOS 10.
